Creating a Customized Smile Design with Dental Veneers
No two smiles are alike. Therefore, no two porcelain veneers are crafted to look the same. At our Montreal, QC, cosmetic dentistry practice, Dr. Berbari will work closely with you as he designs your new smile. Customizing dental veneers involves four primary steps:
Design Your Smile With Porcelain Veneers
1. Consultation
During your initial consultation, our dentist will assess your oral health and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for porcelain veneers. It is important to identify and treat any areas of decay or signs of periodontal disease before beginning the veneer process. A healthy mouth is the key to creating a cosmetically beautiful smile. Dr. Berbari will perform a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums that typically includes x-rays, impressions, and other imaging techniques.
2. Planning
During the planning phase of your treatment, Dr. Berbari will rely heavily on your input regarding your cosmetic goals. Some patients want longer teeth, while others may want more evenly spaced teeth. Some patients may want a smile that looks more symmetrical or one that recaptures the smile of their youth. Your cosmetic goals, along with the spatial relationships between your lips, cheeks, jawline, and other facial features, play a significant role in determining the specifications of your porcelain veneers.
3. Preview
Our dentistry practice features a number of digital imaging tools to help our dentist provide you with a preview of your new smile. So that you are completely comfortable about moving forward, Dr. Berbari can create a mock-up of what you can expect your teeth to look like after treatment. He will take the time and care needed to create an accurate depiction. At this point, you can provide feedback so that the final results look the way you want.
4. Final Adjustments
When your permanent veneers are ready, you can return to our office to have them placed. Your dentist will first try them in to make sure they achieve a precise fit. Next, they will be bonded to each tooth using a special dental cement. Dr. Berbari can make any necessary adjustments to make sure you are happy with your results and that your bite feels comfortable.

How Dental Veneers Are Made
Our porcelain veneers are hand-crafted by skilled technicians at a trusted dental laboratory. We have worked with this dental lab for more than 20 years, and we completely trust them to translate Dr. Berbari’s instructions into a beautiful reality. The technician will create a model of your teeth based on your dental impressions.
Veneers are crafted by building up layers of porcelain inside a mold. Each layer will be hand-painted to the exact specifications of your smile design plan so that the restorations will blend in seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.
Your customized veneers will take approximately two to four weeks to fabricate. When they are finished, you will come back into our office so that Dr. Berbari can place them over each tooth you wish to enhance. Once the veneers are in place, you can start enjoying your newly improved smile.
The Treatment Process from Start to Finish
Preparation
During your first visit to our Montreal, QC, dentistry practice, Dr. Berbari will remove a thin layer of enamel from the front surfaces of each tooth receiving treatment. Without enamel preparation, veneers will appear bulky and unnatural. We strive to provide the most natural-looking appearance possible, but you can count on us to be conservative during this step and to only make alterations that are totally necessary.
Impressions
Dr. Berbari will take impressions that will be used to create your veneers. These impressions ensure that your veneers fit precisely and look natural. Depending on the amount of enamel removed, Dr. Berbari may fit your teeth with temporary veneers to protect the teeth and prevent sensitivity. If a very small amount of enamel was removed, you may not require temporaries.Placement
When you come back to our office for your second appointment, Dr. Berbari will remove your temporaries. Next, the restorations are bonded into place. At this time, your dentist will make any final adjustments necessary to make sure your bite meets properly. Finally, you will be able to walk out of our office after just a short visit with an immediate enhancement to your appearance.See How Veneers Are Placed...
Combining Veneers with Other Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments
Porcelain veneers are a solution that can be applied on their own, or in conjunction with other cosmetic treatments as part of a total smile makeover. Patients will commonly come into our office for veneers and choose to receive a professional-strength teeth whitening treatment as well. This can be especially beneficial for patients who are seeking an overall smile enhancement but have different types of staining and discoloration on their teeth.
Whitening is designed for extrinsic stains, and veneers are commonly used for intrinsic stains. When a patient has both types of discoloration, combining the two treatments is often the best option. Patients have the option to take these enhancements even further with a complete smile makeover, which can combine several treatments to enhance multiple dimensions of your smile. When you trust your smile to Dr. Berbari, the possibilities are virtually endless!
Caring for Your New Smile
Porcelain veneers are strong and durable, but just like your natural teeth, they require the right care. To ensure your new smile remains beautiful for years to come, you should follow a few simple guidelines:
- Continue to brush and floss your teeth as you normally would. However, be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Abrasives can create microscopic scratches in dental porcelain.
- Do not use your teeth for anything other than chewing and smiling. Do not open packages, remove clothing tags, chew your nails, gnaw on pens, or crunch on ice with your veneers. This can cause them to chip, loosen, or fall off.
- When you participate in any type of physical activity, be sure to wear a customized mouthguard. Accidents can happen during any type of physical activity or sport.
- Regular checkups are essential not only to your oral health, but also the longevity of your restorations. We recommend undergoing an exam with Dr. Berbari at least every six months. During these appointments, he can look for any signs of decay or infection, and also make sure your restorations are in excellent shape.
