Correct Gaps in Your Smile with Invisalign By Roni S. Berbari, DMD on July 29, 2020

Woman wearing an Invisalign aligner trayInvisalign® uses a series of clear plastic aligner trays to gradually shift the teeth. Invisalign can correct nearly all of the same issues as traditional braces, including an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or gapped teeth. Gapped teeth compromise the appearance of the smile, throw off the alignment of the bite, and create spaces that are prone to bacteria buildup. While gapped teeth do not always cause the degree of complications that other malocclusion problems do, many people are eager to treat this dental condition.

Invisalign treats gaps comfortably and discreetly. Dr. Roni Berbari offers Invisalign to his Montreal, QC, patients, so that they can get the straight, even smile they desire without the drawbacks associated with traditional braces.

How Does Invisalign Treat Gaps?

Every Invisalign treatment is customized to meet the unique needs of our patients at Montreal Smiles. Prior to starting Invisalign treatment, patients will undergo a thorough exam and consultation. Digital images and physical impressions will be taken of the teeth. Using this information, a treatment plan will be created and custom aligners will be fabricated.

When a patient’s Invisalign aligners are complete, they come to our office to pick up their first several sets of aligners, and receive detailed treatment instructions. To effectively treat gaps, patients are told to wear their aligner trays for a minimum of 20 to 22 hours a day. Essentially, the aligner trays should only be removed when a person is eating, drinking, or brushing their teeth.

Throughout treatment, Invisalign patients periodically switch to a new set of aligners. Treatment specifics may vary slightly, but most patients switch aligners every two weeks. By progressing through the provided aligners, patients can ensure that the teeth and jaw continue to receive the pressure needed to encourage the desired movement.

Throughout treatment, patients return to our office for a check-up approximately every four to six weeks. These appointments allow Dr. Berbari to monitor Invisalign treatment and, if necessary, make adjustments to the treatment plan.

How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Last?

The length of Invisalign treatment for gapped teeth is slightly different for each of our patients. The duration of treatment depends largely on the type of malocclusion problem being addressed, the severity of the condition, and whether the patient adheres to all the requirements of treatment. On average, patients can expect to wear Invisalign aligners for 12 to 18 months. However, if we are just treating minor dental gaps, the treatment timeline may be shorter. Dr. Berbari can provide patients with a timeline estimate at their initial consultation.

Benefits of Invisalign Treatment

There are many reasons that so many patients choose to treat dental gaps with Invisalign as opposed to traditional braces. Invisalign offers a number of benefits that are unique to this treatment technique, such as:

  • Discreet treatment, due to the nearly invisible aligners
  • Enhanced comfort, thanks to metal-free aligner trays
  • Ease of oral care, due to removable aligner trays
  • Greater convenience
