How Do Dental Implants Work?

Your implant is part of a team effort to restore your smile. It works in conjunction with two other components for lasting results. During your treatment, we will use:

Dental Implants

Titanium implants are screws that act as artificial tooth roots to create a natural look, feel, and function.

Abutments

To attach your implant to your restoration, we'll place a discreet connector known as an abutment.

Restorations

To complete your smile, we will secure a custom restoration, like a crown or bridge.

Dr. Berbari Explains The Basics of Dental Implants

Dental implants replace lost tooth roots and support replacement teeth. At Montreal Smiles, we do an intraoral examination and 3D scan to determine if you are a suitable candidate. Pain or discomfort from the surgery shouldn't last for longer than a week.

If You Are Missing Teeth, You're Not Alone

Approximately 6 in 100 Canadian adults have no remaining teeth

According to the Canadian Dental Association, approximately 6 in 100 Canadian adults have no remaining teeth. Implants can help you regain a healthy, functional smile that with good care will last for years to come.

Factors We Look for in Dental Implant Candidates

Advancing techniques and technologies in the field of dentistry have helped more patients than ever access dental implant treatment at Montreal Smiles. Still, there are certain requirements that patients must meet to be considered candidates for dental implants. These include:

Not a candidate yet? We can help.

We Perform Supplementary Care In-House

Many of our Montreal patients need additional treatment to achieve implant candidacy. By conducting these treatments in house, we make it easier for you to achieve dental implant candidacy.

Extraction

Not all of our implant patients come to us with missing teeth. Many have broken, infected, or otherwise severely damaged teeth. If those teeth cannot be saved, Dr. Berbari can perform extractions. He can also perform a socket preservation graft to prepare the area for dental implants.

Bone Augmentation

If your 3D images show that bone loss has occurred — and it often does in patients who have lost teeth — we can perform an in-office bone graft or sinus lift. We have two types of grafts available at our Montreal practice. Autografts utilize bone from another part of your body while allografts use doner tissue.

How long is it going to take to achieve a complete smile?

Your Treatment Timeline Can Span Several Months

Once you begin treatment, you won't have an incomplete smile for too much longer. On a different day following your implant surgery, we can give you a temporary restoration.

Consultation

In order to determine that you are a good candidate, Dr. Berbari and his team will assess your medical history and oral health, and conduct 3D imaging of your jaw and teeth.

Supplementary Procedures

If you require supplementary procedures like extraction or bone grafting, we can help. Each will be performed separately. It typically takes two months to heal after extraction, and three to six months to heal after bone grafting.

Dental Implant Placement

We will administer local anesthesia using more comfortable computerized injections, and can offer intravenous sedation if needed. Dr. Berbari will place the titanium implants himself using a surgical guide to ensure the most accurate result. The length of surgery will vary depending on the number of implants, but most procedures are completed within one to two hours.

Dental Implant Osseointegration

With proper care, most patients are fully recovered within three to four months. To promote the integration of the implants with surrounding bone and tissues, you should avoid smoking and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Abutments

When you are fully healed, you will come back to our office to receive your abutments. We will also take impressions on the same day.

Fabricating Custom Restorations

Your impressions will be sent to a local lab where a skilled lab technician will carefully craft your crowns, bridges, or dentures to fit precisely and complement your features.

Restoration Attachment

A few days later, you will come back to our practice so that we can attach your final restoration. We can make minor adjustments as needed. Then, you can leave our Montreal office with a complete and beautiful smile.

A Closer Look at Dental Implant Surgery

During the implant procedure at our Montreal office, Dr. Berbari will embed the titanium
post into the jawbone. Over the next few months, he will follow this surgery with
abutment and restoration attachment.

How Long Do Implants Last?

/

Most patients will only have to undergo implant treatment once in their lifetime. The risk of complications is fairly low too. Various studies show dental implants have a 95% or higher success rate. To give yourself the best chance for lasting results, make sure to follow all instructions from our dentist.
