Used in the field of dentistry for decades, traditional dentures are one of the most cost-effective teeth replacement options available. However, if they become damaged or worn down, your oral health can become compromised.

While dentures are durable, they do not last forever. Like most dental restorations, they will need to be replaced. Today, our Montreal, QC dental team will discuss signs that your dentures need to be replaced.

How Often Should Dentures Be Replaced?

According to the American Dental Association, the average lifespan of a traditional denture is about five to 10 years. During this time, however, patients will need to have their prostheses relined; this is typically necessary about every two years.

Any time individuals notice a change in the way their denture fits, they should have their appliance evaluated by a dental professional right away.

Why Ill-fitting Dentures Are a Problem

Dentures not only replace missing teeth, they also restore the bite and place the jaw in proper alignment. Damaged or worn dentures can lead to a wide range of oral health problems, including gum irritation, bad breath, exacerbated bone loss, and TMJ disorder.

Signs Your Dentures Need to be Replaced

If you are attending routine dental visits, your doctor can monitor the condition of your denture and recommend relines or replacement when necessary. However, there are other warning signs that could indicate it is time to replace your appliance.  We will briefly explore these in the sections below.

Sore Spots or Gum Irritation

When dentures fit poorly, they can cause sore spots or lesions on the gums. As a result, many patients stop wearing their dentures as frequently. This can lead to further shifts in the bone structure, perpetuating the problem.

Difficulty Chewing

If dentures become loose and wobbly, it is almost impossible to chew efficiently. Digestion begins in the mouth. If you are unable to break food down properly, it can lead to a host of health-related concerns.

Changes in Facial Features

Following tooth loss, bone atrophy occurs over time. As a result, the facial features can appear more hollowed. Dentures fill out the facial features and establish a fuller appearance. However, if you notice that your features are sagging or changing again, it could be time for a new prosthesis.

Difficulty Keeping Them Clean

Over time, hairline cracks and fractures can form in the denture. When this occurs, bacteria can hide in the crevices. This is harmful for two reasons. First, it can keep your dentures from looking fresh and new. Second, the bacteria can lead to painful infections in the gums. Therefore, if your dentures appear dingy or dirty even though you clean them regularly, it could be time to replace them.

Chronic Pain

When teeth are lost, dentures can open the bite and reposition the jaws for optimal function and comfort. However, if your dentures begin to wear down, or if you experience further bone loss, it can affect the way your teeth fit together. As a result, you may experience symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). This can include chronic jaw pain, headaches, earaches, tinnitus, facial nerve pain, and pain in the neck, shoulders, or back. If you notice any of these warning signs, be sure to schedule a dental appointment right away.
