Treat Overlapping Teeth to Enhance the Beauty of Your Smile By Roni S. Berbari, DMD on December 14, 2017

Straight, attractive teethThere are many factors that contribute to a beautiful smile, but many would agree that the three most important are having a full set of teeth, maintaining the white color of the teeth, and having the teeth spaced out evenly.

Unfortunately, overlapping teeth is a problem that affects many patients. Overlapping is a misalignment problem that can develop when the teeth are out of place or overcrowded. In the majority of cases, overlapping teeth can be corrected through cosmetic dentistry treatments that address aesthetic flaws and enhance the beauty of the smile.

At Montreal Smiles, the treatments for overlapping teeth most commonly offered to our Montreal, QC patients are porcelain veneers and Invisalign®. Both of these treatments can provide patients with a smile that looks straighter, healthier, and more attractive.

Porcelain Veneers

Minor overlapping can have a big impact on the appearance of the smile, but it is not likely to significantly compromise the health or function of the smile. As long as the teeth are healthy and functioning, porcelain veneers may be an ideal treatment option for overlapping teeth.

Porcelain veneers are extremely thin ceramic shells that sit on top of the facial surface of the teeth. Porcelain veneers are designed to give each patient the ideal smile they desire. Porcelain veneers can be customized by their size, shape, and color so they blend in seamlessly with the natural teeth.

Porcelain veneers can be placed over a set of teeth or on a singe tooth. Porcelain veneers conceal overlapping teeth to give the impression of straight, evenly spaced teeth.

Porcelain veneers treatment is typically completed in just two dental appointments. At the first appointment, our dental team will do all the planning and designing of the porcelain veneers.

We will then prepare the teeth for porcelain veneers placement by removing a very thin layer of tooth enamel. Finally, molds and impressions will be taken so we can ensure that the porcelain veneers will fit comfortably and securely.

A second appointment will be scheduled when the porcelain veneers are complete. At this appointment, the porcelain veneers are bonded to the teeth to complete treatment.

Invisalign®

Although minor cases of overlapping do not compromise the health or function of the smile, more severe cases do. Misalignment can weaken oral functions and make it more difficult to clean between the teeth, thus increasing the risk of dental complications.

Invisalign® is a great treatment option to consider when overlapping is more severe. Invisalign® works like braces to improve the position of the teeth and correct issues with the bite. However, Invisalign® straightens the teeth without relying on unattractive and uncomfortable metal brackets and wires.

Instead, the Invisalign® system uses a series of clear, plastic aligner trays to discreetly and comfortably correct overlapping teeth and give patients the straight, healthy teeth they desire.

Invisalign® treatment takes an average of 12 months. A thorough exam and consultation will be scheduled prior to starting treatment to evaluate each patient’s smile and create a treatment plan.

Shortly after this consultation, the patient’s custom set of aligners will arrive at our offices. The aligners must be worn for 20 to 22 hours each day. Approximately every two weeks, patients will switch to a new set of aligners.

During treatment, we will continually evaluate the teeth to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments. When treatment is complete, patients will benefit from straighter teeth.
